FAQ

How do I install Smart Tiles on a wall with a corner?

With a square model (Tango, Minimo, Vintage, etc.), start the installation by placing the grout line directly on the corner so that you do not have to apply any unnecessary pressure to the Gel-O. For overlapping models (Bellagio Keystone, Murano Metallik, etc.), you should join two Smart Tiles at the corner.

How can I return my order?

If you purchased Smart Tiles in a store, the store’s return policy applies. If you purchased Smart Tiles online from our site, you can return or exchange a product within 30 days of delivery providing it is not part of a Final Sale or otherwise mentioned that returns will not be accepted. You must first obtain a return authorization number from our customer service (quinco@thesmarttiles.com).

Divide the surface that you need to cover into rectangular sections and measure each section. Then enter your dimensions section by section into our calculator and click Calculate. It will calculate the number of tiles to order based on the model chosen. The tool automatically adds 10% to the total of tiles, for the cutting losses. In the calculator, convert your dimensions in feet (1 foot = 12 inches).

Can you see the difference between Smart Tiles and ceramic or glass?

They are strikingly similar. Once they are installed, very few people are able to tell the difference between them.

What is the Volatile Organic Compounds certification?

Smart Tiles have been tested for Volatile Organic Compounds and aldehydes (VOCs) under ISO 16000 which classifies emission rate from A+ to C (A+ indicating a very low level of emissions and C a high level of emissions). Smart Tiles have been certified as A+ meaning very low level of emissions.

How should I prepare an unfinished gypsum surface?

If there are empty sections between the panels, apply a layer of plaster to fill them in. It is important to have a smooth surface for a perfect bond. Then apply a primer coat to the entire surface and allow 72 hours for it to completely dry. If you use paint instead of primer, it is necessary to wait 21 days for it to completely dry.

We guarantee that your Smart Tiles will stick to your wall for as long as you want them to. Please see our warranty section for our detailed terms and conditions.

Can I install Smart Tiles on a textured surface?

Smart Tiles cannot adhere properly to a textured surface, and it’s not recommended to install the tiles on an “orange peel” painted surface or textured ceramic tile. You may be able to sand your wall smooth and if you do so, apply a primer and allow 72 hours for it to completely dry. You must clean the wall with a degreaser such at TSP (to remove any dust or grease from cooking) and after this you can apply Smart Tiles.

How many tiles do I need for my project?

Measure the width and height of the area to cover and enter the information into our calculator, which can be found on every product page.

Can I install them around a fireplace?

They can be installed on a surface whose temperature does not exceed 49 °C (120 °F). Above all, it is important to avoid any direct contact with a heat source or direct exposure to an open flame.

Is it easy to align Smart Tiles?

First, using a level, draw a horizontal line on the wall at the height of the first row of tiles. The Smart Tiles specially designed adhesive allows the tiles to be repositioned during installation if firm pressure has not already been applied. Easily unstick the tiles from the wall to properly reposition them.

Should I order based on quantity or size?

You must add the number of tiles to your cart that you will need to complete your project. Use the calculator available on each product page to determine the exact amount.

Can I install them behind a stove?

Yes, they are resistant to the heat of a stove. However, if you have a gas stove without a back control panel or metal plate, you must respect a safety zone (without Smart Tiles) of 20 cm (8 in.) above the surface of the stove in order to prevent direct exposure to an open flame and we recommend to install our Smart Panel. For countertop appliances such as toaster ovens, mini ovens and others, keep a space of 6 cm (2 in.) between Smart Tiles and the appliance. It is important to note that some spices with high density pigment color, such as turmeric, can stain the tile permanently.

Should I add a caulked joint between the tiles and the counter?

It may be advantageous to do so. This way you limit possible water infiltration between the wall and counter. A silicone based caulking is recommended.

What are the payment methods?

We accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

Can I install them in a shower?

It is highly inadvisable to install them where they will be in direct contact with water. However, since Smart Tiles are resistant to the humidity of bathrooms, you can install them at a height where they will not be in direct and continuous contact with water. If you install them above the shower wall, and the wall is painted gypsum, make sure that the surface is completely dry and not at all damp or else the tiles will not remain stuck to the wall.

What do printed letters mean on the Smart Tiles?

The letters are for manufacturing purposes only. We suggest laying out the tiles on the counter before installing on the wall to get them in the pattern that you would like. Don’t forget to overlap the tiles so you won’t see the printed letters.

What delivery methods are available?

You can choose between Canada Post (standard package, Xpresspost or priority) or UPS (standard). Prices vary depending on the quantity ordered and where the package is delivered to. Note that additional fees might be incurred for shipments that are redirected or returned to us due to incorrect or modified addresses. You may see the pricing once you add the tiles to your cart in the Estimate shipping and tax section. Orders eligible for free shipping will be sent by the courrier of our choice.

How should I clean and maintain my Smart Tiles backsplash?

Simply use a sponge to restore the shine of Smart Tiles. Use a mild non-abrasive household cleaning product such as dish soap, a cream cleanser or a glass cleaner.

Can I install them over an existing backsplash?

You can install peel and stick Smart Tiles directly over your existing backsplash, whether it is glass or ceramic provided that your surface is smooth, sleek and without texture. You must also take into consideration the width and depth of your existing grout lines as this might affect the outcome. Please click here for more information about installing Smart Tiles over existing backsplash.

Some shapes of tiles (ex: diamond) have more texture than others. We recommend testing with 1 or 2 Smart Tiles that also have texture before doing the full wall.

* IMPORTANT: For the Oslo models, it is recommended that these be installed exclusively on smooth and sleek surfaces. Due to its size, the tile will tend to show any irregularities in the surface. If the surface is even slightly indented such as with a grout line, you must fill any gaps to ensure a smooth application of the Oslo.

For the Norway Bleached Wood and Blok White, it is recommended that these be installed exclusively on a white and smooth and sleek surface. Due to its large size without grout, the tile will tend to show any irregularities and colors of the surface covered.

What must I do before installing Smart Tiles?

The entire surface must be cleaned with a degreaser (TSP, for example) and be completely dry. Make sure that the ambient temperature is between 18 °C (65 °F) and 35 °C (95 °F) and that the peel and stick tiles are at room temperature. Then follow the installation instructions.
